The Southern Downs is preparing for a summer that may bring unusual weather patterns, with forecasts indicating an unusual mix of heat, humidity, and above-average rainfall. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts an increase in both daytime and night time temperatures, with particularly noticeable rises in the evenings due to heightened humidity levels and daytime temperatures that are expected to surpass seasonal norms throughout much of Queensland.

Recent data from the Bureau of Meteorology highlights several climate drivers contributing to these changing weather dynamics. One significant factor is the Indian Ocean Dipole, which is currently in a phase that typically indicates wetter conditions on Australia’s eastern coast. Furthermore, the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is anticipated to shift in the coming weeks, potentially leading to increased rainfall in southern regions. Combined with rising sea surface temperatures, these elements indicate a summer that may be considerably wetter than what residents are accustomed to in Southern Downs.

In light of the impending summer conditions, Queensland residents are encouraged to take proactive measures. It’s essential to stay informed and prepare for potential extreme weather events such as cyclones, floods, and heatwaves. Resources such as "Get Ready Queensland" offer valuable guidance on creating emergency plans, putting together emergency kits, and staying updated through alerts.

As summer approaches, communities should remain vigilant with the possibility of continuous weather fluctuations, including humid nights, sweltering days, and the risk of flooding.
