Politics still star in Tenterfield
Tenterfield elections – still counting
The election is over, the tallies are being counted but the fabled Tenterfield Star is no longer alive to report on local politics as it did for more than 150 years - at least not in the print edition. The 153-year-old title which was around to report on Henry Parkes' stirring pro-Federation speech stopped printing during COVID but returned for a few extra years before finally ceasing print publication earlier this month.
Mayor Bronwyn Petrie told The Town & Country Journal that the demise of the Tenterfield Star is a great loss for the community and for history.
However, she looks forward to the expansion of the Journal, and the resumption of coverage for the shire.
The Mayor, as are all Tenterfield residents, awaits the final counts from the recent election. Two wards are expected to go to preference counting to determine the outcome. Check counts are underway as we go to press, but final tallies are expected in time for October 9 when the new Council will hold its first meeting and determine a Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Journal will be there to meet the newly elected members and cover the political life of the shire.
