As the 2024 Paris Olympics edges closer daily, Southern Downers are sending messages of support to local representatives Ben Armbruster, Charlotte Caslick, Harriet Hudson and Matthew Denny.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said their preparation and selection is a sign of familial and community support and an "inspiration".

"Having four athletes from the Southern Downs compete at the Olympics is a testament to the dedication, talent, and spirit of our community,” she said.

“Ben, Charlotte, Harriet, and Matthew represent the resilience and determination that our region is known for, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.

“They are an inspiration to all of us, and we will be cheering them on every step of the way."

Councillor Russell Wantling, from his viewpoint on the portfolio of sporting groups, also expressed support and enthusiasm, flagging that he's "eagerly looking forward to some long, sleepless nights, glued to the television, and cheering them on every step of the way".

To have four representatives competing at the games has been described by council as "a record number of athletes from the region".

The Town & Country Journal is pleased to publish a photo, taken by our journalist, Aston Brown, of a new mural in Allora, of well known local, Matt Denny. The sportsman grew up in Allora. See Gerard Walsh's account in sport, of how to send a message.
