Warwick boxer Jake Wyllie put up one hell of a fight before going down to George Kambosos Jr in the main bout at Qudos Arena in Sydney on Saturday night. Such was the standing of the fight, it was after two women’s world title fights. Some described the fight as epic with Wyllie going down in the super-lightweight fight. Kambosos is a former unified lightweight world champ and won 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113.
The 12-round showdown was Wyllie’s first to go past 10 rounds. Wyllie said after the fight it was amazing to go 12 rounds with an undisputed champion of the world. “You win some fans if you put on a show. I am not going back (to the smaller fights), I want the big fights and decent money,” he said.
Wyllie has three business sponsors in Warwick - Wayne Watt, Chris Murphy and Mike Smith, and Watt said the Warwick boxer was getting on top in the last few rounds. “It was good experience for Jake, there is a suggestion he might get a bout on an undercard to Kambosos in New York,” Watt said. Kambosos is aiming to fight undefeated IBF super-lightweight king Richardson Hitchins providing he can recover quickly to a cut in the eye inflicted by Wyllie in the ninth round.
Wyllie’s performance was even better when he took the fight on with only five days notice after Indonesian senator Daud Yordan withdrew on medical grounds. Kambosos is a very experienced boxer having sparred 200 times with legendary Philippines boxer Manny Pacquiao who won world titles in eight separate divisions.
